She's nearly 2 and I would love to bread her..could there be something wrong?

ANSWER

Hello Kerry!

Especially if you want to breed your whippet, it would be a good idea to take her to the vet for a complete check up.

I hope you'll be able to send us soon the pictures of your whippet puppies on our pages.

Good luck!

Whippet Breeding Age

by A
(Georgia)

What age is too old or unhealthy to breed a female whippet? Is it healthier for whippets to be left alone or to be spayed?

ANSWER:

I am not a dog breeder so I took my time to answer your question in order to consult as many experienced whippet breeders as possible.

I received different answers but on one thing everybody agrees and it is that a bitch should not be mated for the first time later than six years old.

The Kennel Club will not register puppies from a bitch that has already had six litters or is eight years of age at the time of whelping but all the whippet breeders I consulted would stop breeding their bitches long before that maximum age.

With age the probability of birth defects and difficult whelping increases exponentially so, if you wait too long you are facing a lot more risks, complications and expenses.

For registration, the bitch should be at least one year old when mated but for her well-being she would better be at least two years old.

Waiting a little longer will also give you the chance to evaluate her potential before you invest your time and money in breeding a litter.

Spaying or neutering your whippet is a good idea especially if you do not intend to breed your dog and there are always more good reasons not to breed than to breed.

There are many more good whippets born than suitable homes for them.

Whippets are prolific and unless your whippet as proven to be worthy it will be difficult to find a good home for all the puppies.

Selling puppies is not a wise financial investment.

Bitches will cycle all their life, there is not such a thing as human menopause for dogs.

Whippet Male Neutering

by Raymond Feldman
(Palo Alto, CA, USA)

What is the best age to neuter a male whippet?

ANSWER:

It is recommended that puppies undergo the neutering procedure when they are between four and sixth months of age, although the physical health and maturity are factors in determining the most appropriate age.

Your vet will be able to give you the best advice about when to neuter your dog.

Sighthounds are sensitive to anesthesia, make sure your veterinarian knows all about it.

All the best to you and your whippet pup!
