Whippet Dog Photo Contest # 6: Here is the Winner!

Gucci wearing his new collar

Gucci wearing his new collar

Ladies and gentlemen, we are delighted to announce the winner of our Sixth Whippet Dog Photo Contest!

With thirty one enthusiastic comments, Gucci, the most pupuar whippet ever, wins the Spanish leather collar.

All the comments about Gucci were amazing, we never received such passionate entries about any dog, Gucci must be the most loved whippet on earth.

Whippets never stop to surprise me, I had no idea a whippet could be trained as a visual impairment dog but obviously, I was wrong. Gucci, with his loving nature turned out to be the greatest reward for Sarah's commitment to the breed.

We hope to publish soon a picture of Gucci proudly wearing his new collar.

We loved Devo's story and we recognized our own dogs in the seat stealing whippet.

We would like to thank here all the participants that sent us so many great pictures and stories. For us it is a great pleasure to receive all these wonderful entries. The participation of our visitors makes our website more interesting and our work more rewarding.

You didn’t win? Don’t worry, keep visiting our website, we shall start a new photo contest soon, to give everybody a second chance and a beautiful collar to all our whippets.

Meanwhile, enjoy the great whippet pictures sent by our visitors for our sixth dog photo contest!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: Ahh the Good Life!

by Wendy
(Santa Fe, NM)

This is our 12 week old Whippet baby relaxing in his (new home-our home).

He had a long highway journey from Ohio, to New Mexico, he is growing like a little weed, which by the way he also loves to eat (weeds!)

He is a high speed, cuddly bundle of joy in our household, he loves aggravating our 6 yr old cat, who has finally learned he outweighs him by twice so he now chases him back on occasion.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: Jet, the American Sweetheart

by Suzi James (story by Jordyn Cerny)
(Killeen, TX)

Happy Jet

Happy Jet

When I first met Jet, he melted my heart with his sweet personality and winning character.

I have caught myself, many times, just staring into those big, expressive, brown eyes which are always filled with love and loyalty.

He is so graceful that he reminds me of a gentle doe walking through a forest.

One of the most unique characteristics about Jet is that he has a God-given tattoo (white fur blaze) on his back that is in the shape of a jet plane - hence the name, Jet.

His favorite pastimes are rough-housing with his brother, Tyr, zipping across big fields in sweeping circles, and cuddling up on his bed for a little nap.

Jet and Tyr are the best of friends, and like any brothers they like to play, wrestle, and get dirty.

Though Tyr is very vocal in their skirmishes, Jet is more of the quiet type. Holding off until the last minute, he finally charges after his taunting brother to show him how to wrestle properly.

I have never seen a faster dog in my life than Jet. He practically lives off adrenaline, sprinting across the grass like the devil was at his heels.

If he were allowed to run with absolutely no restrictions and no limits, he would probably go a couple of miles straight and only veer off to chase a jackrabbit.

Besides being a very active athlete, Jet also enjoys just lying back and catching some winks.

After a hard day of play, he loves to curl up on his bed and fall right to sleep. He is such a deep sleeper that even his brother's occasional bouts of barking don't wake him up.

Jet is both an active competitor and a gentle sweetheart. His more athletic side explains his love for wrestling with his brother and the urge to sprint for minutes on end across a big empty field, while his more subtle, quiet side comes out when he is just being himself, nobody around to compete with.

Whatever Jet is doing, he always has an air of grace about him, and such a winning personality that it would be impossible to ignore.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: Mooch-E (The Long and Short of It)

by Janet Wolf Moon
(Yuma AZ, USA)

Mooch-E, the picture that sealed the deal!

Mooch-E, the picture that sealed the deal!

I bought Mooch-E through the internet. I was looking for a male whippet to replace my male, Sun-E ( Mariki's Moon of the Rising Sun CD ).

I wanted a large male and Sun-E was.

I started looking before I let Sun-E go to be with Willow, my first whippet ( Sunny River's Willow CD, CDX, FCH, LCM, NA, OA, TT, CGC ).

There was this one litter I was keeping an eye on and when new photos were posted at 4 months of age, there was one photo where he was looking right into the camera: I knew he was mine.

Mooch-E (SunLow's Old Yeller Moon) is named after a character of the original Micky Mouse Club, for those of you that are old enough may remember it.

There was a series on it (I don't remember the name) it was about a bunch of boys at a summer camp.

There was a young boy they called Moochy. This young actor was the younger brother in old Yeller.

He was in a lot of Disney movies of that time. I loved that kid. I named my first dog Moochy and we had many dogs with that name after that.

I decided to bring the name back. He gets along great with Mica, my female whippet, Monkey, my female chihuahua/jack russel mix, and Mma, my female boston terrier/chihuahua mix ( she is being spayed tomorrow ).

So, as you can see, I have two puppies getting into every thing!

Moochy is 10 months and Mma is 6 months old, so, you know, it will be a while before things really settle back down around here.

Luckily they are good natured, loveable, beautiful, fun, and will be great dogs when they do grow up.

Please don't go on holidays again without me!

Our wonderful whippet called Fella is the best friend we could ask for.

He makes me laugh on a daily basis and when we pulled out a suitcase ready to pack for our trip he made his point by sleeping on it and refusing to move!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest # 6: Christmas Woggies

by Olivia Thomson
(Liverpool, UK)

Christmas Woggies

Christmas Woggies

Boomer the black whippet on the right is 1.9 months old and is born on Halloween.

The other partner in crime, Cinder is slightly younger at 1.4 months and is as naughty as ever.

They both like to curl up on my bed which doesn't really leave me much room to sleep at night. It's even worse when my boyfriend comes to stay!

This picture was taken last Christmas and was their first one they shared together.

They love it because I spoil them rotten. This year I am entering the Santa dash in Liverpool and going to dress them up as Santa's little helpers!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest # 6: Olive The Other Whippet

by Sarah
(Ontario, Canada)

Chasing Dragonflies

Chasing Dragonflies

Olive is our 6 month old whippet. She's such a flirt with everyone and get loads of attention at the dog park. She's getting faster everyday!

Her favourite things to do (when she's not getting into trouble) are to chase bugs, throw pillows in the air with her legs, and of course sleep in the middle of the bed under all the covers.

She's the sweetest little girl anyone could ask for. She helps take the groceries in from the car and she'll finish off the last of the ice in the tray no problem. Whatever you're doing, she's doing it right along with you.

We really can't resist that charm. She just knows how to look at you to make you melt.

Wippet Dog Photo Contest # 6: Our Jack

by Paula
(Wales)

Our Jack

Our Jack

This is our whippet Jack as a 6 week old!

He is our first family dog having debated different breeds for ages.

So glad we decided on a whippet, lovely with the children, great on walks/runs, totally chilled in the house, perfect!

He has so many personality quirks I could go on and on!

One of his most endearing is that when my boys(13 and 9)begin to argue or tussle he will attempt to get between them and distract them by playing etc. which in turn has made them more respectful of each other so as not to upset Jack!

Can't imagine our home without him almost one year on from this picture, thanks Jack!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: Frankie from Dreamland

by Rachel's dad
(Dublin, Ireland)

Our teenage daughter Rachel always wanted a puppy but her mother and I always resisted her appeals.

Earlier this year she was recovering from surgery in hospital and we both sat anxiously on the edge of the bed watching her sleep.

There were tubes and other medical apparatus all around her.

Eventually she woke and began slowly taking in her unfamiliar surroundings, she spied us sitting there.

"A Whippet", she croaked, still half unconscious and sore from the surgery, "we will get a dog and it will be a whippet".

Who knows what strange dreams she was having under the general anesthetic but this one came true when a few days later Rachel came home to meet 'Frankie', her beautiful new friend.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: My Boy Tigger

by Ray Feldman
(Palo Alto, California)

Tigger just turned 8 months old. We’ve been together for the past 4 months. He is an absolute joy.

He’s incredibly sweet, affectionate, friendly, playful and a compulsive cuddler. If I’m not available to snuggle with, Sara my elderly mixed pit takes up the slack.

She’s very tolerant of his attentions and even lets him squeeze into her bed. Occasionally she has to gently remind him of doggy etiquette (no nipping ears) with a soft growl.

Of course, my bed is his favorite place, preferably with me in it. At any opportunity, he will crawl under the covers, roll around absorbing my essence and after he has his fill, doze off.

He has one flaw: he’ll never make a watchdog. When someone is at the door, Sara will bark loudly to let me know.

Tigger will sit expectantly in front of the door as though anticipating he’s going to meet a new friend.

I’m 79 years old and understand that I may not have a whippet’s life left in me. Not to worry, he’ll be well taken care of.

He’s already been spoken for by my daughter who loves him as much as I do, and the feeling is mutual. In the meanwhile, I’m basking in the loving companionship of Tigger and Sara.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: Ruler of His Domain

by Anthony
(Brooklyn, NY)

Surveying his kingdom

Surveying his kingdom

Zachary is a 12 (almost 13!) year old Whippet living in Brooklyn, NY. He has an adoring fan base but fame and good looks have never gone to his head - well, maybe a little!

He loves messing up our pillows on the bed while we are away at work and plops himself down in the middle of the pile to snooze the day away until his afternoon walk with his dog buddies and a walker.

In the evening, Zachary is usually asleep in his bed, or under foot in the kitchen while I'm cooking. He loves to be in the center of the action!

He's not a big cuddler, but just likes to know we are there next to him. Basically he has all of us wrapped tightly around his paw - and we love him unconditionally.

Whippetgal and Gucci Whippets

by Sarah Seiderman
(La Jolla, CA )

I got my start with whippets about 1965, when I was rescuing greyhounds and no one else was doing that so I had a lot of dogs on my hands. Then, one day, a friend called and asked if I would like to "co-own" a whippet. I said, "What's a whippet?" !!!! And the rest is history.

From 1970 until about 2000, I owned a lot of whippets -- showing some, breeding others, rescuing whenever one needed a home. A lot of whippets found the love and care they needed, in my arms, in my bed and IN MY HEART!

The dog pictured here was born in Newfoundland in 1998, and was shipped to Portugal, when he was only five months old. He was a big puppy but the "pick of the litter" and the breeder in Portugal thought she would be able to show/breed and make money off of him.

Unfortunately, "Gucci" kept growing! So this cruel woman assigned him to a dirt kennel, outdoors, where he was kept for a year and a half. By the time she offered him to me, he was half-dead...skinny, being eaten by internal and external parasites, had NO SHOTS, had never been socialized and did not know anything about people and love.

Well, his life changed to one of love, medical care and training. When I lost most of my eyesight, nearly ten years ago, he was trained as a visual impairment dog and he has traveled with me to many countries and has shared many adventures with me.

He is now 12-1/2 and still quite healthy. He is the gentlest, sweetest creature in the world, very quiet and very friendly to other dogs and all people. I dread the day when he goes to the Rainbow Bridge and I have to find a new dog.

There will never be another GUCCI!

The day went on with some running in the backyard and now look at him!

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: Sisters

by Christy
(Indiana)

Penny was a year old when we got Eve. Penny wanted nothing to do with her.

She growled and snapped at the puppy every time she got close to her or us.

I started to wonder if they would ever get along and whether I had made a big mistake getting a second female whippet. But slowly Eve won her over.

She would lay next to Penny even when she growled at her and nip at her to get her to play.

They still compete for my attention but are now best friends.

They snuggle and play and occasionally fight just like real sisters.

A Whippet Life

by Jo-Anne Miller
(Junabee, Qld, Australia)

Brock the cheeky whippet

Brock the cheeky whippet

Brock the whippet had at least two owners before we got him as a half-grown pup. Previous owners who had acquired him from a pet shop.

We loved him from the start.

Our (then teenaged) daughter had followed up on an advertisement for 'whippet unwanted xmas gift'. She had to dig deep for the asking price and somehow convinced a taxi to bring him home with her, after being refused entry on a council bus.

Brock came to live on the farm with us and was later joined by Chase, a little whippet companion.

Brock was only 7 or 8 years when we found him in a coma one morning.

Despite every effort by the vets a St. Lucia University vet hospital, he did not respond to treatment.

Uni staff very kindly curled Brock's little body into a sleeping position and placed him in a box on clean white linen. We took him home where he rests in peace beneath the pepperina trees.

Since, we have enjoyed other whippets and currently have Toby and Morag who brighten our lives.

Brock was so special and forever missed, we will never forget our cheeky whippet boy.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest: Tyr Works Hard!

by Suzanne James
(Fort Hood, TX, USA)

Hi, I'm a whippet and my name is Tyr.

Mom calls me crazy, but that's okay cause I know she says it with affection. I have a very important job. I am a therapy dog for my Mama.

You see, she has fibromyalgia and is in a lot of pain a lot of the time. I work very, very hard to comfort her AND entertain her AND make her laugh.

In the first picture, the one with all the splashing, I'm trying to run as fast as I can across the top the water. I really am a very good swimmer, but this makes Mom laugh.

The picture with the bulldog - that's me when I was just a pup. Mom thinks this one is funny too. I don't know why, I thought I was being quite brave.

Mom wants to be an artist, she makes me pose for shot after shot, all in hope of getting that one interesting yet creative photo.

I indulge her because that's what therapy dogs do, isn't it?

He was the Best! I will forever miss him and love him.

So, good bye for awhile my beautiful boy.

I also like going to dog shows and love being handled by my master's granddaughter (and winning). But mostly I like my comfort.

Now my daughter is winning in the show ring, but that's another story.

Our two whippets, Stryder (male) and Redgee (female), often don't see eye to eye on things.

However, on a rare occasion they can be seen hangin' together and lounging out on my husband's recliner watching TV. Yep, they truly enjoy watching television together.

Here they are just hanging out together enjoying some down time.

I am sure that shortly after their TV show ended, they were back at rough housing together. They are truly a comical pair!

Dog Photo Contest #6: Whippet Good

by Araminta Matthews
(Lewiston, ME, USA)

Devo with his Baby

Devo with his Baby

I always wanted a whippet that I could name Devo after the band that did the song "Whip It", but I could never justify getting a purebred dog when there were so many loveable dogs at the shelter in need of caring homes.

So, when Devo (then named "Primo") found his way into the shelter, my aunt Vickie, a volunteer at the Humane Society, called us immediately to say, "There's a whippet at the shelter and his name is Primo, so I think it would be really easy to shift him to Devo!"

We called the shelter immediately an arranged a meeting. Devo was timid at first, and met us with a tremble in his thin legs that spread to his whole body. This coupled with the soft, almost fearful look in his eyes made me fall hopelessly in love with him. My partner and I had to take him home, and so we did.

We've only had him for a month, and in that time we've learned to spoil him silly.

He's got his own room, two beds, a baby (as seen in the photograph) that he snuggles when he naps, and a host of treats for the finicky eater that he is. And what's more? My partner and I live in Maine, an area known for its particularly harsh winters.

I knew this tender-skinned guy was going to need a solid winter coat, so I made one out of fleece and quilted spandex, and made matching booties to boot!

Devo has brought a light to our lives. He's like our child, I think. We talk about him like he is, anyway, and we certainly love and snuggle him like he's part of our family. Well, he is part of our family.

This particular member of our family, though, has an issue with tugging and we only just realized there were specially-made collars for whippets that could prevent skin abrasions from tugging against his leash.

That's how I found this site and this collar. He'd look so stylish in that thing. Thanks for considering us for such a fancy prize.

Whippet Dog Photo Contest #6: Trio of Whippets

by Curtis Deck

Pack of Hounds

Pack of Hounds

Here's the pack getting ready for a run in the woods. Chase, Lexi, and Pipper.

The two Brindles are from Northern California, bred to run like the wind. While our party colour girl is from just outside of Calgary, and is bred for show.

We always receive lots of comments on our whippets at the local off leash areas.

Everyone is quite amazed at their speed, when all three start buzzing around.

It's almost like letting 3 jets take off when we take them off the leash in these enclosed parks.

We had a couple of close calls in Fishcreek park, which is a wide open park with no fencing.

One took after a herd of deer and didn't come back for an hour, while the other had its run with the jack rabbits.

Everyone was fine, but now it's the fenced park or the racing field only.

I have forgotten how delightful it is to have a puppy around. Devo is my pet for therapy friend, and I simply adore him. He just loves to snuggle on the couch and I am surprised that he can sit so quietly!
Devo has filled a huge void in my world..

We have only had him for 3 weeks.. and he is now 14 weeks old.. and he is like my best friend already!

We went to puppy pre-school this week and we have never laughed so much in our lives! He had such a wonderful time socializing with all the other pups.

I am so glad I researched this breed. Devo is my first whippet, and I think I will love being owned by a whippet! : )
