Whippet Dog FAQ: Whippet Size

by Donna

How large does a whippet grow to?

I had a whippet at one time that picked me for her owner.

She was beautiful but I don't think she was 100% Whippet. Her coloring was so pretty!

She was so sweet. Now I live alone and I wish she was with me.

I can only have dogs that don't weight a lot. I want a real dog not one of those little little ones.

ANSWER:

Whippets are medium sized dogs but are quite light. Males are bigger and the Ameican standard allows taller dogs.

An American male whippet can reach 22 inches (56 cm.) and about 15 kg.

European whippets are smaller they range from 17 to 20 in (43-50 cm) and weight between 9 and 12 kg (20-26 lbs).

Whippet Dog FAQ: Small Whippet Size

My 5 month old Whippet puppy (male) seems rather small in comparison to other Whippets I've seen. My older Whippet (a female) was full grown by 6 months.

The puppy is still 4 inches shorter at the shoulder (he measures 17") and is about 4 - 5 inches shorter in body length compared to her.

Is he just going to be a smaller dog than the norm or is it still too soon to tell?

ANSWER:

Whippets can vary quite considerably in size.

An American male whippet can reach 22 inches (56 cm.) and about 15 kg.

European whippets are smaller they range from 17 to 20 inches (43-50 cm) and weight between 9 and 12 kg (20-26 lb.).

At 5 months your puppy is not fully grown yet.

The best way to know what the size your whippet will be as an adult, is to speak with the breeder and have a look at his parents.

Best wishes for your new puppy,

Elda

Whippets upper and lower weight?

by Kate
(San Diego, CA)

I understand that Whippets from Europe weigh less than the Whippets in the USA.
How much do each weight? Is it possible to acquire a European Whippet here in the USA short of paying for the import of one?

ANSWER:

Yes, European whippets are smaller than their American cousins.
Whippets generally weight between 9 and 15 kg but neither the American nor the English standard state the ideal weight, the only requirement is the correct size of the dog.
Have a look at this page fore more info about the required size in the different whippet standards.
As more than one-half inch above or below the stated limits will disqualify the dog in a dog show, I don't think there is any American whippet breeder that breeds dogs with the English standard in mind.
Nevertheless, if you want a small whippet, you can look for a bitch instead of dog.
Females are always smaller and an American whippet girl could be the approximate size of a European male.
