The Leather Whippet Collar

The wide leather whippet collar has been the favorite choice of hound owners for centuries. Find out why also your dog deserves the perfect whippet and greyhound collar.

We encountered this wonderful painting by Paolo Uccello (1397-1475) at the Oxford Ashmolean Museum.

This small but perfect picture shows a night hunt, a vivid scene teeming with excited horses and hounds arranged in a flawless composition that reflects the artist’s obsessive interest in deciphering the laws of perspective.

The sheer aesthetic joy of watching this fascinating masterpiece, didn’t stop the keen hound lover in me and I couldn’t but notice the hounds collars and leads.

The collars are of the wide type we still use for our whippets and the dogs are held at the leash in a simple and smart way that allows to release them quickly.

When the hunter lets go of the rope in his hand the hound is quickly released. This simple system allows the hunter to hold and release his hound single handed.

The traditional use of wide leather collars for hounds is testified by numerous ancient paintings and statues without doubt because these kind of collars offers many advantages.

First of all they are comfortable for the dogs. Even if the dog pulls hard when excited during a coursing or a hunt, he won’t hunt his delicate neck or throat.

These collars are comfy enough to be worn all the time, they are easy to grab in any critical situation and a dog tag with your telephone number can be attached for emergencies.

The classic whippet collar is safe and sturdy because it won’t get twisted or ripped. A good quality leather collar will stay in good shape for years especially if it comes in the classic colors black or tan that won’t discolour easily.

A wide collar offers some protection for the delicate throat of a short coated hound in case of a fight with other dogs or wild animals.

Last but not least, the hound collars look beautiful on the elegant whippet or greyhound necks, they tastefully enhance the grace of our dog’s profile.
