Low Maintenance Dogs

List of Dog Breeds for Lazy Owners

Discover low maintenance dogs in this list of dog breeds especially designed for lazy owners looking for their ideal match.

Whippets are the kings and queens of low maintenance.

They are the ideal pet for fastidious housekeepers and moderation is their war cry.

Whippets require only minimal grooming, shed very little, have no odor, require a reasonable amount of exercise, a moderate quantity of food to keep in top shape and generally enjoy a long and healthy lives.

What more can you ask from a faithful companion?

I am obviously biased in their favor but in case you would like alternatives, I prepared a list of dog breeds that are low maintenance.

I kept the characteristics of whippets as the golden standard: minimal grooming, reasonable exercise requirements and moderate amounts of food (do not underestimate the cost of dog food in any form).

This list doesn't aspire to be complete, how could it?

If you don't see your favorite low maintenance dog breed in the list, share your knowledge and add your favorite dog breed with the form at the end of the page!

The Basenji is one of the oldest existing dog breeds. In Zaire and Sudan they are still used for hunting. Basenjis are active and spirited medium sized dogs with upright ears and tightly curly tail. The creases in their face give them a questioning look. They don't bark but are nevertheless vocal with a typical yodel type cry. They come in various combinations of black, red and white. Their coat is odor free and needs very little grooming.
