Sighthounds are a type of working dogs, pictures of whippets and greyhound art testify of their role as hunting partners. My husband one evening pointed out that all our pictures have animals as subject and most of them are dogs. Well, he is absolutely right and there is a very good reason to it: I can hardly think to a more engaging subject to decorate our walls. Watching working dogs do what they like and do the best is for me and any other animal lover absolutely fascinating. We collected here some pictures of whippets and greyhound art in classic hunting dog pictures, a tribute to the role they played for centuries as superb working dogs and hunting partners. Hare hunting in a Roman mosaic with dogs that remind me of our modern sighthounds. Gaston III, called "Phoebus" for his blond hair, was a great hunter and writer. He composed his Livre de Chasse between 1387-1389. Some copies arrived to our days and became the most famous hunting book of the middle ages for the exquisite miniatures. The book describes different phases of hunting, animal behavior and dog care. Pieter Bruegel painted this scene in 1565 and it became over the centuries the best loved dog hunting picture for the feeling of winter wonderland it communicates despite the harsh cold and snow. In the pack of dogs it is easy to see some greyhound type dogs cautiously following the hunters in the snow. George Stubbs (1724 – 1806) was an English painter that became very popular in his time for his hunting scenes and accurate portraits of horses and hounds.
