Greyhound Dog Pictures

Ancient greyhound dog pictures testify that these dogs accompanied man from the beginning of civilization.

Pictures of these hounds grace antique Greek vases, medieval tapestry and renaissance paintings demonstrating that this is probably the most ancient breed of dogs.

At the left you can see a collection of beautiful greyhound dog pictures from AllPosters, the biggest online poster company. To enlarge one just click on it and to see more click on “next” at the end of the page.

Greyhounds are now mainly bred for racing and often when retired from a racing career, are destroyed.

Many greyhound rescue groups are active in selecting the most even tempered dogs to give them for adoption.

After living with people for so many centuries, its more than natural that greyhounds cover the role of pets masterfully.

Here are some facts to consider when thinking about adopting a greyhound.

Size

Large, with an average height of 70 cm. (28 inches) and a weight of 29 kg. (65 pounds) they are by no means toy dogs.

Color

Any color.

Energy Level

They are rather inactive when indoors.

Life Expectancy

10-13 years.

Exercise

Greyhounds can live in apartment as long as they can run and stretch out regularly in a safe area.

Health

Like many big dogs, greys are prone to bloat.

Sensitive to anesthesia.

Other Animals

Greyhounds generally get along with other dogs. Some can live with other pets but the prey instinct is very strong and they might chase cats and small pets.

Children

Patient with children though they do not usually enjoy rough play.

Grooming

Minimal, really low maintenance. Average shedding.

Training

Ex-racers are not usually difficult to housebreak because they are already crate trained from the track and they tend to adapt well to the comforts of a home.
